Claudia Brownlee is a costume designer and educator whose practice is grounded in storytelling, historical research, collaboration, and sustainable design. Originally from the Washington, DC, metropolitan area, she is passionate about creating work that bridges cultural perspectives and invites audiences to engage more deeply with story and character. Her approach to costume design considers clothing as both a visual language and a tool for world-building, using costume to reveal character, shape narrative, and establish meaningful connections between performers and audiences.
Claudia holds an Associate’s Degree in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology (2014), a Bachelor’s Degree in Theater from the University of Maryland, College Park (2017), and an MFA in Costume Design from Carnegie Mellon University. Her professional experience spans costume design, production, management, and education, giving her a comprehensive perspective on the collaborative nature of theatrical design.
Currently, Claudia serves as an Assistant Professor of Costume Design at Louisiana State University, where she combines professional practice with teaching, mentorship, and artistic development. Alongside her academic work, she maintains an active practice as a costume designer and is a member of United Scenic Artists, Local USA 829. Whether in the classroom, rehearsal room, or design studio, Claudia is committed to developing imaginative, thoughtful, and sustainable approaches to costume while cultivating collaborative environments that empower artists and support the next generation of theater makers.
